Daily Post-It Monster Edition!

Here are my daily Post-It sketches Monster Edition 7/23-7/27. I enjoy having a theme for the week so I think I'm gonna do that for now on. If you have any suggestions for future themes let me know. Thanks for checking these out I post these sketches everyday on Instagram (neilsegura). I may possibly create a blog just for Daily Post-it sketches, but for now I will just post them here at the end of the week.

Daily Post-It 7/9-7/20

Well doing a sketch a day proved to be too much for me to handle during san diego comic con, so I picked up where I left off. These sketches were done over 2 weeks. Next week I'll get back on track. I'm thinking about doing a theme for each week.

I made it through another week of daily sketches! Next week will be a bit of a challenge because I will be at San Diego Comic Con, but I'll get them done.

Cartoon Masters Class of 2012

My diploma and final evaluation from Joe Murray's Cartoon Masters Class 2012! 

Complete with a nice little sketch of Rocko. Such a great, in depth class. I had an awesome time.  

Lunchmeat

I finished a 6-week course instructed by Joe Murray (Creator of “Rocko’s Modern Life” and “Camp Lazzlo”) this weekend. Joe helped me put together an entire animated series proposal from scratch. I went into the class with not much of an idea and by the time it was over I had a fully developed cast of characters in their own unique world, a design style that reflects the mood and theme of the show, a handful of sample show premises, and an ironed out synopsis and overview of the show.

“Lunchmeat” is loosely based off my experiences working in a service deli. The show is a fun light-hearted comedy that pokes fun at our unsatisfying jobs and the struggles of bettering our situations. I'm a big advocate of writing what you know.

This class was pretty intense, but it taught me so much about adding depth to my characters and premises while creating a property that will have longevity. I feel I created a solid foundation on which to build upon. I will be applying these skills to all my work and I look forward to creating an even better proposal next time around.

My goal is to pitch to at least one studio this year.

 

iPad Sketching

I recently purchased a wacom bamboo stylus for the iPad. I have the sketchbook pro app and drawing with my finger just wasn't cutting it. I did a little research on stylus pens and decided to go with the wacom because, well its wacom and thats what the do best. iPad stylus technology is not that great. The nib is very thick and there is no sensitivity. It's tough to get a good drawing done with this. Its is definitely better then drawing with my finger, I have more control and it feels more natural. It's really tough to get fine detail which I found out quickly.

I use the sketchbook pro app to capture rough ideas on the go. There are a good amount of features like layers, cool brushes and a color palette. It's pretty close to the computer version. If only they could make a good stylus with some pressure sensitivity it would be amazing. It's nowhere close to using a cintiq, but you can do some cool stuff while chilin at a starbucks.

Drawing in Public 10

I've been crazy busy the last month working on Forever Freshman Issue 2. I put all my energy and spare time into drawing and inking the book in just over a month. It wasn't easy but I learned how to get the most out of my days. Eat, Sleep, Work. Now I can go back to sketching during my lunch breaks. After working on nothing but the comic for the last month I was in real need of some creative sketching. I managed to squeeze a few in these last weeks. I have been experimenting with toned paper, markers, colored pencil, and a little Gouache.

The Process

I am doing all my drawing in sketchbook pro. I start off with a rough drawing to find the right pose. I work out the basic composition first before starting any detail.

I tighten up the drawing a little more defining the heavy detailed areas like the feet and those crazy feathers. I also alter the composition a little to accommodate the added feathers .

Now that all the lose ends are figured out I start inking. I try to use simple and expressive lines here. My main goal is to capture the energy of the original drawing.

Here I start adding details and shadows to bring some life and personality to the drawing.

When I am happy with the black and white drawing I will move it to Photoshop to start coloring. First I fill the main areas with flat color.

Then using mostly the burn and dodge tool I will add shadows and highlights to better define the form. I mask out a lot of areas and separate parts in many different layers.

Here I add the finishing touches on the character like super highlights, texture, a secondary light source and of course sparkles. These little things really bring the piece to life.

The background is a series of gradients, textures and photoshop brushes for a fancy effect. I add the drop shadow as well.
